Rights and responsibilities of DELF-DALF candidates

Each candidate for DELF and DALF tests has rights and responsibilities related to the exam.

Registration

The candidate has the right to:

  • register directly for the exam of their choice without having to verify that they have achieved a prior level of this exam, or any other test.
  • register at the approved exam centre of their choice.
  • to sit an exam as many times as they want until they achieve the diploma, on condition of having obtained their results before moving to a new registration.
  • receive specific arrangements if they have a disability, as long as they provide a medical certificate two months before the date of the tests.
  • re-enrol for the following exam session after publication of the results, regardless of whether they have passed or failed the exam.
  • request that their registration be reimbursed or transferred to the following session in the event of a justified absence (a medical certificate must be provided).

It is the candidate’s responsibility to:

  • respect the registration period for registering with an exam centre.
  • send all the information required for registration (contact details).
  • settle the cost of registration fees within the period indicated.
  • choose the version of the exam that corresponds to their profile (older teens and adults: “tout public” or “Pro”; children in secondary school: “junior” and “scolaire”; children in primary school: “Prim”).
  • send their candidate number to the exam centre if they have already sat a DELF or DALF exam.
  • indicate any disability by providing medical certificate at time of registration.

Notifications and test periods

The candidate has the right to:

  • receive an individual notification with the dates and times of the tests.
  • use a monolingual dictionary – only for DALF C1 verbal skills, DALF C2 reading comprehension/written skills and listening comprehension/ verbal skills.
  • leave the exam location during tests after the first hour temporarily or definitively
  • receive draft paper to prepare their answers.
  • in exam room tests, listen to the invigilator’s instructions that explain the structure of the tests and the rules to follow.

It is the candidate’s responsibility to:

  • arrive at the test at the time indicated on their notification.
  • present a valid form of ID on the day of the exam.
  • put away all of their personal items, switch off their electronic devices and place them where indicated by the invigilator.
  • write with a black or blue pen.
  • respect the anonymity of the exam: the candidate must not sign their paper or use their real first name or surname in answers, but instead use a pseudonym.
  • have a calm and respectful attitude towards invigilators and other candidates.

Penalties will be incurred if the candidate does not respect these rules.

Diplomas and results

The candidate has the right to:

  • receive their results within a reasonable period (maximum: 2 months).
  • receive a temporary certificate of achievement from their exam centre if they have requested one.
  • receive a diploma that is valid for life and printed on non-forgeable security paper.
  • have their tests double-marked (two markers for the exam room tests and two assessors for the individual tests, excluding the DELF Prim, in which one assessor is required for the individual test).
  • be impartially assessed.
  • see their corrected paper, regardless of the result, in line with the methods specified by the exam centre.

It is the candidate’s responsibility to:

  • accept their results: the assessors make the final decisions, which are definitive. The candidate cannot contest their results, unless there has been a fault in the materials or an irregularity in the test conditions.
