2021, a record year for the TCF

In 2021, more than 219,000 candidates signed up to the 10,629 sessions organised by our network of 763 accredited centres across the world. This represents an increase of 26%, greatly exceeding the figures of the last record-breaking year, 2018.

France Éducation international has noted an uptick in participation in TCF (French Knowledge Test) sessions in many countries since the start of 2021. After many sessions were cancelled in 2020 because of the pandemic, a large number of candidates were waiting for the accredited centres to reopen to realise their projects.

3 particularly popular versions of the TCF

There was a particularly high level of activity in the last quarter of 2021 in three main areas:

  • The TCF to obtain French nationality with nearly 47,900 candidates,
  • The Canada TCF, which exceeded its defined objectives, with nearly 29,000 candidates.
  • The TCF sessions for the general public (TCF TP), which received more than 111,900 candidates.

Candidates are offered the option of taking the TCF on a computer

The TCF is available in two different formats: paper and computer. The latter is available for all versions of the TCF, and provides greater security and faster processing due to the paperless testing system. It thus represents an ideal solution for all sessions, whatever their size. Indeed, more computer-based TCF applications have been installed in the centres, enabling 63% of the candidates to take their tests on a computer (compared to 57% in 2020 and 48% in 2019).

2022 is already proving to be a great year for TCF activities. As in 2021, France Éducation international’s teams continue to provide support for the network of accredited centres. They help these centres to meet the high demand for the Canada TCF, to offer TCF sessions for the general public that facilitate access to French universities and, finally, to deploy the new Integration, Residency and Nationality TCF.
