The CIEP becomes France Éducation international

The CIEP has embarked upon a fundamental transformation. On 4 July, Jean-Michel Blanquer, the French Education Minister, came to unveil the institution’s new brand that will be called France Éducation international. This milestone marked the initial culmination initiated by the Minister over the last several months: to make this institution the key operator of educational cooperation for the Ministry of Education, which now has a new educational ambition on the international scene. Educational and linguistic cooperation becomes a central theme in France’s international policy. It is about putting education at the heart of public action in regard to development. It is the reason why the institution has a new objective and performance contract 2019-2022, adopted at the end of 2018, that aims to support this ambition.

France Éducation international hosted two exceptional events. First of all, the 4th international symposium of the Revue internationale d’éducation de Sèvres, 12-14 June, dealt with the “conditions for successful education reforms.” What does success look like when the contexts are so diverse? Why are some educational systems more successful than others? Why do some regress? In short, can we identify a certain number of conditions that are essential to hope that a reform can effectively and positively transform the educational system of a country? These questions, and many others, were raised and discussed during this symposium that welcomed more than sixty experts from thirty countries, researchers, practitioners and policymakers, amongst whom were several former ministers. One way to continue the necessary dialogue between the cultures that serve the world’s educational communities.

The second event was the G7 Group of Education Ministers Meeting held ahead of the meeting of Heads of State and Government that France is organising for August. Two themes were highlighted in particular: early education, on the one hand, as a means of combatting inequality at school from the youngest age, a major challenge facing all of the States. The quality of teacher training, on the other hand, which is an essential condition for raising levels of education and fighting against inequality. The challenge is to provide teachers with quality initial and continuous training and meet the new challenges posed by society. Two major themes for the future world, where the challenges concerning education are considerable.
